“We appreciate the decision by the Amir of the State of Qatar to enable the release and home-coming of these nationals.”

In an unforeseen turn of events, seven Indian Navy veterans detained in Qatar were released and brought back to India, catching them completely by surprise. According to sources close to NDTV, the veterans were unaware of their impending release until the night before when jail authorities instructed them to prepare for departure. The group was quickly moved to the embassy and then to the airport, embarking on a journey back home that culminated with their arrival in Delhi at 2 am.
The officers, who were employed by Dahra Global, a private company in Qatar, faced serious allegations reported by major international news outlets to be related to espionage for Israel. Jairam Ramesh, the general secretary of the opposition party in India, last year urged the government to clarify to the detainees’ families and the Indian public the reasons behind the delay in securing their release, even after more than seven months of detention. Indians form a significant part of Qatar’s foreign workforce, which is over 2 million strong and represents 95% of the labor force in the affluent Gulf state, as per United Nations data.
